Geometry and Color: A Philosophy in Design

Dang Ming's Award-Winning Office Design for Maike Group

In the realm of architecture and design, Dang Ming's Philosophy of Geometry and Color stands as a testament to the power of form and function. This article explores the unique properties and innovative techniques employed in this award-winning design project.

The Philosophy of Geometry and Color is a project that draws its inspiration from the architectural design and the interior public space of the Maike Center building. The design language expressed in the "Silk Road" bridging structure in the building is echoed in the design of the installation in the public space of Maike Group's office. This connection between the architectural characteristics of the Maike Center and the office design is achieved through the extensive use of geometrical elements including angled line segments, triangles, and straight lines, as well as the use of round corners.

Such design representation is mainly expressed in the spatial layouts of room functions on each floor, the outlines of various materials and fabrics, the shapes of decorating lamps and the ambiance of lighting, and the positioning of furniture and its texture. The design also features a vertically-gridded background wall with crystal bar rods that imitate streaks of rain falling into a water feature, joining the reception background with the installation.

Transparent glasses on the sides not only ensure safety but also allow the delicate and harmonious beauty of the white steel plates and wooden steps to infiltrate into the public space. The natural green plants at every stairway platform help create a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The use of casual office furniture and appropriate lighting design integrate together the real needs of employees for a functionalist space, open spaces for negotiations and discussions, and recreational space for tea breaks.

The design also includes a mini-landscape featuring waterfalls, pebbles, and playing fishes, as well as lively arrangements of flowers and plants and a scenery of the moon. This artistic and natural element creates an interesting environment for the office space. The reception lobby looks out through the window into the mountainous ranges of Qinling Mountain, bringing the faraway mountains into the inner space by using contour lines as a design concept.

The project, which started in August 2016 in Xi'an and finished in April 2018 in Xi'an, was a challenge in inheriting the architectural design and the design of interior public space of the Maike Center building. However, Dang Ming and his team, including Jia Chenghao, Qian Xiaoqian, Cai Bo, Xie Xu, Tang Xin, and Wang Haichuan, were able to successfully relate the design of the installation in the public space of Maike Group's office with the design language expressed in the "Silk Road" bridging structure in the building.

The Philosophy of Geometry and Color was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
